Big brother’s world

Big brother’s world

It was the rainy season and for weeks on end it was cloudy or rainy every day. Then, on the first sunny day in weeks:
Me: “It’s sunny again, isn’t it!”
Big brother: “Eh, isn’t it always sunny?”
Me: “No way, it’s the rainy season (梅雨つゆ) now and it’s raining every day! Do you know what the rainy season (梅雨つゆ)is??”
Big brother: “Ofcourse I know, it’s delicious soup, right?”
Me: “Not that つゆ!”
As I was saying that, I was hanging the laundry out to dry. Then big brother told me:
“Mom, you always wear those clothes don’t you?”
He said that, but the clothes I was wearing that day were a dress I had just bought and put on for the first time and leggings I hadn’t worn for years. I would just love to take a peek at what goes on in that head of his!

REMARKS

久しぶりに
This translates to “for the first time in a long time” and is a very common phrase in Japanese. It is not always possible to translate this phrase directly, hence why in the text above, I opted for several different translations.

In Japanese, you will use 久しぶりに especially often when meeting people after not seeing them for some time, eating something you haven’t had in a while and when you visit a place you haven’t been to in some time.
