Sports day

僕ぼくは火曜日かようびに運動会がありました。そして僕が一番いちばん頑張がんばったのは、徒競走ときょうそうです。
徒競走で走はしる前まえはとても緊張きんちょうしました。
ゴールするときにバランスをくずして、トップだったのに２位いになってしましました。
そして、退場たいじょうするときにお父とうさんに会あって、お父さんが言いいました。
「おしかったね。」
と言ってくれました。とてもうれしかったです。

I attended sports day on Tuesday. I did my best the most on the race.
I was very nervous before I ran the race.
When I passed the finishline, I lost my balance and even though I was in first place, ended up in second place.
Then, when I left the field, I ran into dad and he said:
“That was close”. I was very happy that he said that.

～してくれる in Japanese is usually untranslatable into English. It conveys a nuance of gratitude. Neko’s brother implied that he was grateful for his fathers words by saying お父さんが言ってくれました rather than お父さんが言いました。

REMARKS

The race part of the sports day is open to all students, but there is a relay event, that only the fastest kids from each class get chosen for. Neko’s brother hopes to take part in the relay every year, but he never gets picked.
