Nengajou【年賀状】

日本にほんではお正月しょうがつに年賀状ねんがじょうという葉書はがきを友達ともだちや親戚しんせきに送おくります。

○明あけましておめでとうございます
　昨年さくねんは大変たいへんお世話せわになりありがとうございました
　今年ことしもよろしくお願ねがいします

というようなことを書かきます。

明あけましておめでとうございますは、お正月しょうがつの挨拶あいさつで、お正月しょうがつに会あう人ひとにはこのように挨拶あいさつします。

年賀状ねんがじょうは句読点くとうてんを使つかわずに書かきます。点てんや丸まるは区切くぎりを意味いみするので、関係かんけいが終おわるという意味いみが含ふくまれてしまうようで、使つかわないみたいです。

子こどもたちは年賀状ねんがじょうを書かくことを楽たのしんでいました。

In Japan, it is a custom to send greeting cards called “nengajou” to friends and family for New Years.

We write something like

“Happy New Year!
Please accept our gratitude for all you’ve done for us this year.
We look forward to continuing our good relationship in the next year.”

on these cards.

“Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu” is a New Years greeting and is also used when we meet people for the first time in the new year.

When we write nengajou, we don’t use punctuation. The reason for this is apparently that periods and commas imply an ending, and to avoid implying the ending of the relationship, punctuation is not used.

The kids enjoyed writing nengajou.
